More News on Vaping and Combustible Tobacco
Following up on our recent blog "Vaping to Quit Smoking Traditional Cigarettes? The Top 6 Things You Need to Know" another study confirms the advice of avoiding dual use. Dual use is defined as both smoking traditional cigarettes AND vaping.
The study, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, found that dual use of ENDS [electronic nicotine delivery systems or vaping] and smoked tobacco is significantly associated with respiratory symptoms compared with use of either product alone or non-current use at baseline.
The importance of this study is twofold. First, despite similar frequency and intensity of tobacco smoking among exclusive tobacco smokers and dual users, dual users have a higher incidence of respiratory symptoms. ENDS use and tobacco smoking together may result in more lung disease.
These researchers also analyzed youth and adults without recent respiratory symptoms. They found a significant association between dual use and respiratory symptoms was even stronger after removing those who stopped their dual use. Those who use ENDS to stop smoking tobacco should be cautioned against dual use.
Are you switching, cutting down or trying to quit? How is that going for you? We want to know.
